    Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp has been designated head coach-in-waiting by the university, expected to take over the Longhorns when coach Mack Brown retires. Muschamp is in his first year with Texas, but athletic director DeLoss Dodds said Tuesday he and Brown know they want to keep him at Texas. To do that, they will more than double his salary from $425,000 to $900,000 in January. He will remain defensive coordinator.

    Rich Rodriguez loves to win - and he hates to lose as much as anyone. Michigan's coach, though, tries to keep as much perspective as he can. Rodriguez has his wife and kids around him after practices, at the team hotel and on bus trips to the stadium. His office door is always wide open, allowing visitors to say hello.
  • Gophers expect Decker back for Iowa game
    Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker is expected to return to the lineup this week against Iowa. Decker missed the last game at Wisconsin and was limited to a handful of plays the previous week against Michigan because of an ankle injury suffered in the game against Northwestern on Nov. 1. One of 10 finalists for the Biletnikoff Award, given to the best receiver in major college football, Decker leads the Big Ten with 74 catches. The junior is second in the conference with 892 yards.
  • Threet, McGuffie doubtful for Michigan vs. Ohio St.
    Michigan might be missing some key players at Ohio State. Coach Rich Rodriguez said Monday he doubts quarterback Steven Threet or running back Sam McGuffie will play against the 10th-ranked Buckeyes. Rodriguez says Threet has a shoulder injury, and McGuffie had a death in his family. Running back Brandon Minor says he will play in Michigan's finale after missing a game with rib and shoulder injuries.
  • Long steps down as New Mexico's head coach
    Rocky Long is stepping down after 11 seasons at the helm of New Mexico's football team. Long's resignation is effective immediately, athletic department spokesman Greg Remington confirmed Monday. Long said in a statement that he appreciated all of the support during his tenure and he thanked former athletics director Rudy Davalos, UNM President David Schmidly and athletic director Paul Krebs for helping make the program better over the years.
